Design Research Project

This project served as an introduction to design research, methods, and practice, encouraging critical engagement with an assigned audience group. Through a structured process—including a research sprint, conceptualization and testing, intervention, and reading discussions—I explored my role as a designer in a world where tools like Canva and AI are accessible to non-designers. This project challenged me to move beyond creating polished artifacts to addressing real design needs. It pushed me to consider what has been done, what can be improved, and how design can truly contribute to those who interact with it.

Class: Design for Society

Project Type: Design Research,
User-Centered Problem Solving, Brand Identity

1. Research Sprint

I was assigned the SUB (Student Union Building) for this project. I had to identify audience needs and improve user experiences by conducting interviews and analyzing feedback. I had developed questions and engaged with a diverse audience. The goal was to uncover areas for improvement, whether systematic, informational, or experiential.

2. Conceptualization & Testing

Based on the Research Sprint, I developed two design need statements outlining potential interventions:
1. Pop Up Cafe: There is a need for more healthier and diverse food options at the SUB
2. Oasis Lounge: The basement of the SUB needs something that will make it a more inviting and engaging environment for students
I then created light prototypes for these interventions and conducted user testing with eight target audience demographics. Feedback from testing informed final design decisions.

These are the two prototypes that I showed during interviews

3. Intervention

For the final phase of the project, I consulted with two campus professionals to assess the feasibility of creating an Oasis Lounge in the SUB basement. These discussions inspired a complete redesign of the space, blending its historic elements with a modern aesthetic to create a functional and inviting environment.

4. Outcome

Mike and Butch admired the renovations at Romney Hall for blending old and new elements and noted the SUB basement’s was originally designed as a 1960s diner, but with minimal investment since then. As a graphic designer, I planned to create a mural featuring historical imagery and develop branding, menu, and package designs to revitalize the space.
